A Word To The Wise ...

As most of you know I have MS which I choose to treat with the disdain I believe it deserves.  Anyway (there must be another word for anyway but I can't find it) so anyway I was diagnosed with Diabetes oh I don't know 10 or 15 years ago.  I've not taken any more notice of this than I have of the MS to be perfectly truthful.

So what's happened that makes me use the title I've used?  I have a blood glucose meter that I've had since I was diagnosed.  Okay it's not the original meter and I've been through a few because like everything else I needed to have the latest that was available so one went to two .... and you know the rest.  So maybe 10 meters later I got this phonecall from a doctor - not my doctor, but another one from the practice we belong to, and it had been pre-booked to go through my medication and after we went through it all she told me I that as my HbA1c has been so good I don't need to test my bloods anymore.

Nevertheless (I went into word and typed in anyway and then went to the Thesaurus and got nevertheless instead of anyway) I haven't been feeling well for quite a while and blamed the MS - well you do, don't you?!?  I do!!!  So last week I had an appointment with my doctor and told her what was going on that I was really itchy, incredibly tired and sleeping like all night and well into the next day, really really irritable (not like me at all usually) as well and I can't remember what else I said was wrong (okay okay it was Thrush).  My doctor is really great and she said "I think it's your diabetes".  And I said no way - that doctor that phoned said I had it really under control and don't need to test my blood anymore.  So after Jo (my doctor) said it might be the diabetes I decided to test my blood.  Here in the U.K. your levels are meant to be between 4 and 7 and mine was 17.9!!!  Which was way way too high.

So now I've gone onto the internet to see what this can cause.  I went to the Diabetes U.K. Website this is what I found:

"People with diabetes are being denied the chance to monitor their blood glucose levels because vital test strips are being rationed to save money, according to a new report by Diabetes UK."

So I guess this is what was behind that dumb doctor - okay she wasn't dumb ... I was because I listened to her.  I never questioned why she said I didn't need to test my blood anymore.   I mean you don't question doctors now do you?  Well I didn't - at least not until now.  I also don't go looking for trouble that's why I don't look up stuff on the internet.  I basically just don't want to know what might happen or could happen.

So my word to the wise is : Be responsible for your own wellbeing and take notice of what your body is telling you.

I don't want to leave you without a photo so here you go:

Here is O who is 4 years old today

  2. You're so right about listening to your body. I have a borderline diabetes, and was prescribed insulin tablets. I stopped taking them when I realised how awful I felt all the time, and now feel much better controlling it with diet alone. I talked to the doc and he was OK with it too.

  3. Hi Patti, I have diabetes also. I take a medication for it that keeps me pretty level. I can tell if my level goes high or low by how I feel. Everyone around me can tell because if it is off I am not pleasant! ha ha.
My MD has never had me check mine and without a prescription, it is too expensive to buy the strips. Nevertheless (see I borrowed that) my A1C stays pretty good.

  4. Too true, we have a terrible habit of thinking everything doctors say is the word of god, and it really isn't, I know several people who have been caught out! :o)

  5. I do believe that we all need to take our health into our own hands. We know our bodies better than anyone else. Glad it is getting sorted out for you!

  6. I learned that the hard way myself. I had some issues that led to an MRI that led to my drs diagnosing me with MS - only later to be dismissed by my neurologist as severe migraines after a spinal tap and other numerous tests! I learned to appreciate life and health. And not to listen to an initial diagnosis.

  10. If the doctor says something that doesn't sound right, PLEASE question it! I got a phone call a few years back to schedule an MRI that for our baby we'd already declined after discussing it with the specialists. The woman was really pushy, telling me that it would show what was causing my child's seizures....um *my* kid had never had a seizure (if he had, I'd be happily consenting to whatever tests they wanted)

They were scheduling procedures based on someone else's chart.
